This presentation is designed to introduce you to the next generation of Apple's operating system—
Mac OS 8—and give you an opportunity to better understand Apple’s directions for future operating system releases.
Mac OS 8 is a “work in progress”—we expect to make changes to what you'll be seeing today. For the most current information on Mac OS 8, be sure to visit Apple’s Mac OS site on the World Wide Web. The address is http://macos.apple.com.
• Getting ready to run the Tour:
System Requirements:
• An Apple Macintosh or Mac OS-compatible computer with a 68040 or PowerPC processor
• At least 8MB of RAM, with 5 MB free
• Macintosh System 7.5 or later
• QuickTime 2.1 or later (included on CD)
• A 13-inch or larger color display with at least 256 colors (some demos may display better in
thousands of colors)
• A double-speed CD-ROM drive (quad-speed recommended)
For best performance, be sure that you have Virtual Memory turned off while running the Tour.
To install QuickTime 2.1:
1. Locate the System Folder on your hard disk. Open the System Folder by double clicking on its icon.
2. Locate the Extensions folder inside your System Folder. Open the Extensions folder by double clicking on its icon.
3. If there is a copy of the QuickTime extension in the Extensions folder, drag it to the Trash. Note: do not empty the trash until you restart your Macintosh.
4. If there is a copy of the Apple Multimedia Tuner extension in the Extensions folder, drag it to the Trash.
5. Close the Extensions folder. Close the System Folder.
6. Drag the QuickTime, QuickTime PowerPlug, and QuickTime Musical Instruments icons to your hard disk’s System Folder icon (not into the open folder).
7. Click OK in the dialog box that appears.
8. Restart your Macintosh.
• How to start the Tour:
Double-click the "Mac OS 8 Tour" icon on the CD to launch the demonstration.
Due the nature of CD-ROM technology, you may notice pauses during the operation of the Tour. This is to be expected, and occurs while information is being loaded into your computer's memory.
• Navigating within the Tour:
The introductory animation/narration can be interrupted by pressing the mouse button at any time; a second mouse click will bring up the main Tour menu screen.
Within each menu screen, certain text elements are active—when you roll over an active area, the mouse arrow changes to a hand to indicate that additional information is available, and the surrounding area will visually change color. By clicking the mouse to select an item, you'll see additional menu screens, text screens, or self-running and interactive demonstrations.
The bottom of every screen contains additional navigation buttons. Clicking the "Mac OS" button at the bottom of the screen will show general information on the advantages of the Mac OS. The "Glossary" button takes you to a glossary of terms used within the Tour. When available, clicking on the "Previous" button at the bottom of the screen returns you to the previous menu; clicking on the "Main" button returns you to the main menu. Clicking on the "Quit" button ends the Tour.
There are two types of demonstrations contained in the Tour: interactive demonstrations, where you can get information by navigating through the demonstration, and self-running demonstrations, where you can view a scripted presentation on a particular topic. You can exit either type of demonstration at any time by clicking on the "Exit" button located on the lower left part of the screen. By the way, you'll notice an extra mouse arrow on the screen whenever a self-running demonstration is running.
